Manassas Activity Update August 12, 2014

Did you know that the City of Manassas received the Award of Excellence from the Virginia Downtown Development Association for the Main Street Streetscapes project that was completed in October 2013? This award “recognizes excellence in physical design projects and planning related to revitalization districts such as streetscapes, public improvements, window displays, parking areas, wayfinding, parks and preservation, and design guidelines”. The Virginia Downtown Development Association is an independent association that focuses on the importance of Virginia’s downtowns and supports and promotes leadership in downtown revitalization throughout the Commonwealth. This project widened narrow sidewalks on Main, Center, and Battle streets to allow for outdoor dining and improved pedestrian access. Brick crosswalks were added to intersections and 19 Allee Lacebark Elm and Green Vase Japanese Zelkova trees were planted to enhance the beauty of the street. The Main Street Streetscapes project was part of the City’s continuing investment in the Old Town area in an effort to attract visitors and enhance their experience in the City of Manassas. In 2000, Manassas began recreating the Old Town area by making an investment in the Candy Factory and creating the Loy E. Harris Pavilion.

In 2005 and 2006 the sidewalks on Center Street were widened and streetscapes improved. In 2008, improvements were made to Battle Street. Now residents and visitors can take in a band while dining or shopping along Battle Street or attend a cultural event at the Harris Pavilion or the Center for the Arts at the Candy Factory.

Each year, the Center for the Arts, in partnership with Micron Technology Foundation, the City of Manassas and the Harris Pavilion offers a series of free concerts. The popular concert scheduled on Saturday evenings August 16th at 6:30 is the Dixie Power Trio! Bring your chairs, blankets, and picnics to enjoy these concerts with your friends and neighbors!
